Dr Ralph Stanford
Prince of Wales Hospital
Ralph Stanford is an orthopedically trained spine surgeon working at Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney. He completed orthopaedic training in Sydney in 1999 and travelled to the University Hospitals of Cleveland (USA) in 2000 to train with the world renowned Dr Henry Bohlman. On his return in 2001, Dr Stanford took up an appointment at Prince of Wales Hospital with the purpose of practising complex spinal surgery. He introduced more active surgical intervention in spinal cord injury and developed a close relationship with the Spinal Injuries Unit at the Hospital. In 2009 he implemented the ‘non-refusal’ policy which has significantly reduced admission times for acute spinal cord injury to the spinal unit at Prince of Wales. Dr Stanford runs outpatient clinics for people with spinal issues, operates on trauma and elective spinal cases and teaches medical students from UNSW and orthopaedic trainees accredited with the college of surgeons. He was scientific secretary for the Spine Society of Australia for four years. At present he is implementing clinical research in spinal cord injury across both spinal units at Prince of Wales Hospital and Royal North Shore Hospital.
